Hurricane Jimena bearing down on Rumiko

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, "...EXTREMELY DANGEROUS HURRICANE JIMENA MOVING NORTHWEST...NEW WATCHES ISSUED FOR BAJA PENINSULA AND MAINLAND MEXICO..."

Hurricane Jimena is headed for the Baja peninsula, and is predicted to make landfall on Wednesday. The most recent predictions (these are updated every few hours) show Rumiko as being directly in Jimena's path. By the time Jimena reaches Santa Rosalia, and the marina where Rumiko is located, it is predicted that it will have weakened to either a Category 1 hurricane (winds 74-95 mph) or a tropical storm (winds 33-73 mph).

Needless to say, we are following Jimena's progress with much concern - both for Rumiko and for the people and communities on the Baja Peninsula. Good web sites for tracking hurricanes in the Baja region include EEBMIKE, or the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC). The graphic below is from the NHC (with a slight adaptation by Lisa).

So, Rumiko - our little home on the Sea - is sitting in the path of Hurricane Jimena. Meanwhile, we are 1,800 miles away in Durango doing some maintenance and upgrades on our Lightner Creek house.

Yes, we are wishing we were in Santa Rosalia right now, so that we could be doing everything within our abilities to make sure that Rumiko rides out the hurricane safely, but alas, we are not there. Fortunately, our friends Richard and Krista and their sailing vessel Lilith are at the Santa Rosalia marina, and will be keeping an eye on Rumiko. Also, the workers at the marina will be watching our boat and others, and doing their best to ensure that the boats are as safe as possible.

Most of our other sailing buddies (Isis, Limerick, et al.) are in Bahia de Los Angeles, which is spitting distance from Don Juan, a hurricane hole. Hopefully, by the time Jimena reaches Bahia de Los Angeles the winds will have significantly abated. But if not, it is good to know that our friends have a protected area in which to ride out the storm.
